If you need help when we are closed

Out of hours

If you become ill and your GP surgery is closed, there are several options available to you.

Call 999 in a medical or mental health emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.

111

NHS 111 is here to make it easier and quicker for patients to get the right advice or treatment they need, be that for their physical or mental health.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To get help from NHS 111, you can:

  • Go online to 111.nhs.uk (for assessment of people aged 5 and over only).
  • Call 111 for free from a landline or mobile phone.

Our out of hours service is provided by Shropdoc. You will be called back by a doctor or nurse. It may be possible to resolve your health concerns with advice over the phone or with a prescription to your local pharmacy. When appropriate you will be offered an appointment to see one a clinician at one of their bases or a home visit.

Pharmacy First

Your local pharmacist will be able to give you free health advice – you don’t need an appointment. Many pharmacies operate extended hours on a rota basis.

Many Pharmacies are signed up to the NHS Pharmacy First scheme which means they can assess and treat the following;

Impetigo 1 year and over
Infected insect bites 1 year and over

Minor Injury Units

If you’ve hurt yourself, had a fall, burnt yourself or are suffering from another non-life-threatening issue, the Minor Injury Unit is a fast and effective way of getting treated without the long wait in A&E.

Urgent treatment centres

Urgent Treatment Centres can help with a range of symptoms from high temperatures in children, breathing problems, severe headaches, abdominal pain, painful infections through to mild injuries and burns.

The centres offer appointments that can be booked through 111 and are equipped to diagnose and deal with many of the most common ailments people attend A&E for. They help ease the pressure on hospitals, leaving other parts of the system free to treat the most serious cases.
We have Urgent Treatment Centres located at both hospital sites (Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital, Telford) within our Emergency Departments. They are open from 9am-9pm seven days a week.

Addresses of the two hospital urgent care centres;

Princess Royal Hospital, Apley Castle, Telford TF1 6TF

Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Mytton Oak Rd, Shrewsbury SY3 8XQ
